Based in Philadelphia, #FillTheWallsWithHope began in early March, 2020 in response to the growing number of boarded up businesses, emptiness, and fear that was spreading across the city. We asked artists and poets, "If you could fill the walls with your words and images, what would you share in this moment to support folks emotional/mental health, share resources, and help us all dream of a more just, creative, and beautiful future?" As dozens of submissions came in, they were printed and wheat pasted on blank walls and boarded up businesses. Within a month we've installed over a thousand posters across the city.

The project has since developed partnerships with journalists, non-profits, and city programs to help spread public health information and graphics to thousands of residents through yard signs, virtual billboards, vinyl decals at free food distribution sites (giving people safe places to stand while sharing hopeful images and information), and a multitude of mass distribution strategies.

Have a building and wanna host the exhibition? Reach out and we'll organize!

Did you download, print, and put them up in your windows or neighborhood?
Send a photo and we'll put it up here!

Ruth and Clearfield

5 days a week #StepUpTothePlate is doing free food distribution, medical support, and so much more for folks in Kensington. This week we had the honor to partner with them on some new #FilltheWallsWithHope wheatpaste murals to help make their work look, feel, and function as powerful as possible. This mural was made possible through the support of Mural Arts (thank you!)

Supporting their food distribution (twice a week) our artwork serves as the backdrop as they serve out hundreds of boxes of free food, resources (including coloring books for kids!) and more. Artwork has been paired with public health messaging and been transformed into huge vinyl banners, yard signs, vinyl decals (to mark where people can safely wait for food while having something beautiful and informative to read), and wheat paste murals.

Huge thanks to Color Reflections PHL for printing our banners and vinyl decals for free!!!! Support their work!

EMERGE // Multiple Locations

THE LATIN ROOT OF THE WORD EMERGENCE, EMERGERE, MEANS “TO BRING TO LIGHT.” We partnered Mural Arts Philadelphia’s on the EMERGE campaign aims to foster inspiration and hope, acknowledging not just the intersections of COVID-19 and systemic racism in America, but the innate strength and resilience of people of color challenged by both pandemics. Apprentices in The Guild, a job readiness curriculum for citizens returning from incarceration, were paired with a writing coach to develop their original PSAs, we then helped them turn these into powerful portraits and posters which we then pasted up on walls across philly.

Poets: Freeway, Mary “Isis Tha Savior” Baxter, Ant Brown, Nina “Lyrispect” Ball, Ursula Rucker, Taliah Neal, Wayne Gainey, Saul Miller, Tamir Redding.
Video Production by Chad Eric Smith, MisterDuke Productions LLC.
Posters designed
 by Mark Strandquist, Kate DeCiccio.
Emerge Campaign led by Restorative Justice Director, Greg Corbin. PROJECT MANAGER: Kali Silverman

Outside of Mariposa Co-op

We set up a banner outside of #MariposaFoodCoop in SW philly so that, as people wait in line to get into the store (cause The Coop is taking the right moves for all of us!), they have something positive, informative, and inspiring to read and engage.
